I think you have no business acting…in front of a camera. No one wants to catch you acting. It’s disagreeable, peoples toes curl when they catch you acting.

Secrets are really big with actors, it’s good to have secrets. You can tell the director a lot of things, you can always communicate with the other actors about stuff but it’s always good to hold back secrets and to have things that are inside you, that only means something to you. You share emotions and feelings and you give to other actors and that’s the best way to be, but there are secrets that you can keep.

His presence makes clear that he loves what he does. He’s an actor who, no matter how many years later, loves what he does and brings every bit of passion to it. He said to me -

“All these other people are here. All the actors are here and they’re all doing the same thing and many of them for a very small fraction of the [money] or recognition…that I get, so why can’t I do it? Why can’t I stand here?”.

- and that’s a level of humility that I think makes someone an amazing artist and craftsman.

You realise that some of the things that you are feeling as a person, they can be used for something. For something bigger than yourself…you can express yourself but through someone else’s words. I suppose that kind of thing struck me very strongly.

Being larger than life and yet your pride is crushed with self-loathing. I am, by nature, sort of a loner. I kind of like my own company. I don’t have a big circle of friends. I never liked parties or going to bars. At times that’s proven quite problematic, because I live in my own head.

If you’re a good-looking man or woman in Hollywood, they don’t need you to act, you just have to show up. You show up, take your shirt off and play the love scene like you mean it, you know? Look at the woman, the man, whatever it is and play the love scene. So that’s all [Matthew McConaughey] had to do. He was making $10, $20 million a picture.
